Local SEO for Small Businesses: Getting Google Business Profile Right

If you run a local business — a clinic, a salon, a repair shop, anything with customers who need to find you nearby — the map pack that shows up above regular search results is usually where the real traffic lives. And that map pack is driven almost entirely by your Google Business Profile, not your website.

Start with the basics, done properly

Your business name should match your actual signage exactly — not "Smith Plumbing | Best Plumber in Austin," just "Smith Plumbing." Stuffing keywords into the name field is against Google's guidelines and, more practically, it tends to backfire once a competitor reports it. Your category needs to be as specific as possible; "Plumber" beats the generic "Contractor" every time, and you can add secondary categories for anything else you genuinely do.

The part everyone skips: reviews

Review count and recency are two of the strongest local ranking signals there are, and most businesses treat reviews as an afterthought instead of a system. Ask every satisfied customer, every time, ideally with a direct link that skips them straight to the review box. A business with 40 recent reviews at 4.7 stars will regularly outrank one with 200 reviews that stopped coming in two years ago.

Consistency beats volume. Ten reviews this month matter more for ranking than sixty reviews from three years ago.

Photos aren't decoration, they're data

Upload real photos regularly — your storefront, your team, finished work, the inside of the shop. Google uses this activity as a signal that the business is active and legitimate, and customers use it to decide whether to trust you before they even reach your website.

Keep your hours and info current

This sounds too obvious to mention, but I audit local listings constantly with outdated hours, old phone numbers, or a "temporarily closed" tag nobody removed after reopening. Every one of those is a lost customer who showed up or called at the wrong time and never came back.

A well-maintained Google Business Profile, updated monthly, will often bring in more calls than a redesigned website. They work best together — but if you can only manage one this quarter, manage this one.
